INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICAL DESIGN AND STRESS ANALYSIS OF SELF-PIERCING RIVETS (SPR) JOINTS



SPR Rivets image To help reduce emissions and fuel consumption the automotive industry relies heavily upon constructing lightweight aluminium vehicle body structures using self-piercing rivets (SPR). Other industries are also sharing interest in SPR Joining.

For medium volume car production it is essential that a minimum number of self-piercing rivets (SPR) are used to achieve cost viability as each SPR has its own dedicated robot. The SPR are usually made from steel so it is also important to minimise the number of SPRs in a vehicle to achieve minimum weight. But also the number of SPRs must provide adequate structural integrity and stiffness. SPR Joint design is a multi-discipline challenge.

The SPR course/workshop provides a detailed presentation with notes and formulas relating to the practical design and strength analysis of Lap and T-Peel joints formed with Self-Piercing Rivets (SPR) and combined SPR with adhesive bond. Strength and Failure mode modelling allows for product designs that maximise the structural reliability and minimises the weight and associated cost.
